Abdominal Etching

Abdominal etching is a relatively new procedure closely related to the standard tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. It is a treatment best suited to patients who only have a small amount of fat deposited on their abdomen. Abdominal etching is not a weight loss surgery, nor does it remove large amounts of fat or skin from the patient. Traditional liposuction or abdominoplasty is more appropriate for patients who desire the latter. Abdominal etching does not tighten the muscles in your abdomen and that is why it is recommended to patients who already have relatively tight abdominal muscles.
Abdominal etching is basically a cosmetic surgery that helps define an individual’s existing abdomen. During the surgery, a special cannula is used to remove fat and shape the stomach area. The plastic surgeon knows where to remove fat from markings he made earlier when the patient flexed his or her muscles. Abdominal etching also results in a flatter stomach for patients who choose to undergo this procedure.
People who have already had a tummy tuck or liposuction can later come to Mexico for abdominal etching. During your initial consultation with your plastic surgeon he will determine if you are ready for this procedure or if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck or liposuction instead. If you have not yet had a tummy tuck or liposuction, you can discuss combination procedures and see if abdominal etching can be done at the same time as another related surgery.
The abdominal etching procedure lasts about one hour and can be done under local, general or twilight (sedated) anaesthetic. It is usually an outpatient treatment which means that you will not have to stay overnight in hospital. If you chose a general anaesthetic, your recovery may need to be monitored for a few hours after your surgery.
During the abdominal etching surgery, a number of tiny incisions are made in the navel or in the creases of the abdomen. The surgeon then sculpts grooves into the fat layer with a cannula. A different cannula is used to remove some of the fat deposits. It is a relatively delicate procedure so it is important to choose a plastic surgeon that has had extensive experience in this area.
After your surgery you will have to wear a compression garment to help your body adjust to its new shape and reduce swelling. You will have to take it fairly easy for the first few weeks but will be able to resume regular activities in 2-4 weeks. The full results of your abdominal etching will be seen in the months following surgery. Before this time, however, your stomach will feel tighter and firmer.
There are a number of risks and side effects associated with abdominal etching so make sure you are aware of them and know your options should any complications arise.
The final results of the abdominal etching will depend on the individual’s physique. If a patient wants to maintain their results they will have to eat healthily and frequently exercise.
