Breast Reduction Procedure

The breast reduction procedure is carried out under general anesthesia in an outpatient clinic. You may be required to stay overnight but this is not usually the case. During the surgery, the glandular tissues, fatty tissues, and skin of your breasts will be reduced.
Before the breast reduction, the plastic surgeon will make markings on your breasts while you are sitting down to show what they are like when you are upright. These markings look like anchors and will be used to make the correct incisions during the surgery. A line will be drawn from your existing nipples to their new location higher up on your chest.
During the breast reduction, an incision is made along the surgical markings. Excess skin, fat, and glandular tissues are removed through flaps made on both sides of your breasts. Nipples remain attached to the underlying nerves and blood vessels but moved to a higher position. Women who have very large breasts may need their nipples grafted to a new location. This is generally avoided unless absolutely necessary because the nipples and areola will lose all sensation. After the surgery, the flaps of skin are refolded and pulled before being stitched in place. The weight of the breast is reduced as a result of the removal of breast tissue and skin, and the breast achieves a much more compact and pleasing appearance. In some cases, excess fat may be removed through liposuction in conjunction with the technique described. If your breast size is a result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be used for breast reduction.
When your breast reduction is finished, you will have stitches under your breasts, around the areola and in a vertical line moving downwards from your nipple and horizontally under the breast. Some surgical techniques can avoid the horizontal scar if the breasts were not too large. You will need to wear bandages for about two days after your surgery.

It is important to be aware that there are a number of risks and side effects associated with the breast reduction procedure but your plastic surgeon in Mexico will explain these to you.
